For people asking me to remotly help them with their PC a short introduction to installation and use of TightVNC.

VNC for Windows

Get "tightvnc-1.2.9-setup.exe" from the download page.

Installation and use are described on the documentation page. The following text describes shortly just the steps needed so I can take over your PC.

Execute "tightvnc-1.2.9-setup" which installs TightVNC. The Programs menu will now contain an item TightVNC with several sub-items. For security reasons use only the "Launch TightVNC Server" sub-item. The other ones are not really dangerous, but one should always know what things are for, before trying them out.

The first time you use "Launch TightVNC Server" a "Properties" dialog is displayed. It looks like this:

VNC Properties Fenster

First you should enter the password. Anybody who guesses it, will be able to use your PC, thus choose something unguessable. My suggestion is to use 12 random character which do not form any meaningful word. Then remove the checkmark at the left of "Accept Socket Connection". This should disable incoming connections altogether, giving you more control about who can access your computer.

After confirming the Properties dialog by pressing the "OK" button, a new Icon appears at the lower right corner of your screen. It looks like this:

You can move the mouse over the icon and click the right mouse button. This will bring up a little menu. Two items on this menu are important:

Add New Client
This allows you to set up a new connection.
This terminates TightVNC.

If you want me to help you and give me control to your PC for that, you can do this using "Add New Client".
